
Matt Darriau was named one of the most influental
jazz musicians of the
last fifteen years by Jazziz Magazine for bringing balkan rhythms and melodies into jazz.
Besides being a leading innovator in the "Jewish Alternative Movement" (with his own „Paradox Trio“)
Matt Darriau is also active as composer and musician in the new celtic band
„Whirligig“, the big band „Orange
Then Blue“, his swing band „Ballin´ The Jack“
and the „Recycled Waltz Orchestra“
, a quintet dedicated
to film music. He is also a regular member of the Klezmatics since 1995.
Klezmer, celtic music
and early swing music at the same time -
all this shows Matt Darriau´s vast knowledge about musical history and
his virtuosity
as a performing musician and as a composer.
Matt also plays in addition to alto saxophone and
clarinet several ethnic flutes
from the Balkan (kaval, gaida) and owns wooden flutes from all over the world.
Matt Darriau was presented with both of his bands, Ballin' The Jack and Paradox Trio
at the Jazzfest Berlin in november
2003 and is constantly touring both bands in europe and the US..
As a leading artist of the downtown musicscene
in New York Matt Darriau played
with Gunther Schuller, The Klezmatics, Frank London, Lorin Sklamberg, Elliott Sharp,
Marc Ribot, George Schuller, Theodosii Spassov, Mark Feldman and many others.
