Matt Darriau was named one of the most influental
jazz musicians of the
last fifteen years by Jazziz Magazine for bringing balkan rhythms and melodies into jazz.
He
joined the Klezmatics as their reedman in 1995.
Besides being a leading innovator in the "Jewish
Alternative Movement" (with his own „Paradox Trio“)
Matt Darriau has also been active as a composer
and a musician in the new celtic band
„Whirligig“, the big band „Orange Then Blue“, his swing
band „Ballin´ The Jack“
and the „Recycled Waltz Orchestra“ , a quintet dedicated
to
film music.
Matt also plays in addition to alto saxophone and clarinet several ethnic flutes
from the
Balkan (kaval, gaida) and owns wooden flutes from all over the world.
Matt Darriau was presented with both of his
bands, Ballin' The Jack and Paradox Trio
at the Jazzfest Berlin in november 2003. In 2004 the band adapted the music
of the Marx Brothers
Movies.
As a leading artist of the downtown musicscene
in New York Matt Darriau played
with Gunther Schuller, The Klezmatics, Frank London, Lorin Sklamberg, Elliott Sharp,
Marc Ribot, George Schuller, Theodosii Spassov, Mark Feldman and many others.
